GREAT TRAILS IN NEW HAMPSHIRE
Ammonoosuc Rail Trail
The Ammonoosuc Rail Trail is a great beginner trail in New Hampshire. It’s a little over 19 miles over easy gravel, sand, and dirt and follows the beautiful Ammonoosuc River. It’s a popular fishing, kayaking, and canoeing trail, as well as popular with ATVs, hikers, and snowmobilers. You can turn this ride into a history lesson for the kids as you will pass several small historic mill towns. You can even get on the trail not too far from our Littleton location. From Littleton, the trail winds through Lisbon, Bath, and Haverhill. You’ll pass forests, wetlands, and fields. In the fall, this trail is literally littered with beautiful fall northeast leaves. It’s definitely a trail to leisurely take so you can see and enjoy the colors of nature around you.
Sugar River Trail
If you like stream crossings, then this trail is for you. The Sugar River Trail is 9.5 miles long and crosses the Sugar River seven times — twice on covered bridges. This trail meets another trail, the Bobby Woodman Trail. B&B Towing and Recovery in Littleton notes that this is a great beginner trail for the new ATV rider as well that is mainly flat with dirt and rocks. This trail is popular with mountain bikers, hikers, and equestrians. You’ll wind through the towns of Newport and Claremont and pass through woods and open spaces. This trail is rapt with wildlife, so be on the lookout for deer, rabbits, beavers, raccoons, wild turkeys, and even a moose now and then.
Blackmount Rail Trail
Another great beginning ATV trail, the Blackmount Rail Trail is about five miles long and runs through Woodsville and North Haverhill in New Hampshire. It consists of gravel, some wood chips, and cinder. This trail follows the Connecticut River and gains very little elevation.
Warren to East Haverhill Railroad Grade Trail
This trail is a 10 mile long trail that starts by a missile that was placed there in 1971 to inspire youth to explore space. This is an easy grade going uphill from Warren to a pass through the White Mountains at Glencliff until the trail descends down into East Haverhill. This is a bit more challenging of a trail, but will give you plenty of practice navigating hills. ATVs are only allowed on the section of the trail from Warren to Glencliff, so it’s an out and back trail. Beautiful scenery and a wonderful way to spend your afternoon.
